Sports, sports, sports, sports

This past weekend was the annual "sports" weekend in the Zawacki house. The one where our college friends come for a visit, and our house is full of people and our weekend is full of Michigan sports events like the hockey and football games. This weekend happened to be a beautiful one for it as well. Sunny and mid 60's all Saturday afternoon!
First up, was dinner with our friend Dr. Riles at Casey's. It's quickly becoming a tradition. We laughed, got caught up, watched horrible women's soccer clips, and debated about swine flu. Seth even managed to get his favorite macaroni and cheese again. :-) Then after dinner it was off to the hockey game. It was a disappointing loss, but fun all the same. We rounded out the night by heading back to our place in Milan, playing some board games, drinking some homebrews, and noshing on pretzels and edamame.
Saturday, we awoke bright and early to head out to the game. We had a bit of a breakfast snafu (darn you Milan Grill for not being open early for breakfast on Saturdays!) and had a horrible meal at the local Campfire Restaurant. Hopefully nothing a little post-game Jimmy John's wouldn't fix. We walked to the stadium just as the band was leaving Elbel field, so we were treated to quite a show along the way. Nothing like a game in the Big House. Again, another disappointing loss, but this time, we had sandwiches as our consolation prize.

At the Big House
Post game sandwiches, we found ourselves fighting traffic back to Milan. We needed to change clothes and take naps though, before our big scheduled evening of an Anthony Bordain talk at the Michigan Theatre (dinner at Vinology for Seth and Lisa) followed by dinner and drinks at the Grange Kitchen and Bar. After napping and relaxing, we almost didn't make it back to Ann Arbor in time, because we had no idea just how busy it would be! Thankfully a parking spot was finally secured, and we took our seats for AB. His talk was witty and funny, and wasn't filled with "too" many Food Network celebrity chef jabs. He did talk about a very funny instance during his reign as a visiting judge on Top Chef that I don't think any of us will forget.

Heading out to Grange at about 10pm rolled around just as my stomach beast was starting to stage a fit. We managed to get seats for our party of seven in the main dining room, thanks to my open table reservation. The lovely Churches joined us for drinks, and they kept Seth and Lisa company while Brad, Andrew and I oogled the menu. The boys decided on the walleye and trout respectively, and I couldn't pass up the cider-braised beef. Naturally, we also ordered appetizers; radish and butter sandwiches with sea salt for Andrew, grilled leeks for Brad, and the surprise winner of the evening, spicy fried chickpeas for me. Delicious!
Good Times at Grange
We headed home after Grange, tired and weary from our long day. Our guests had an early 8am flight, so there was no opportunity for another grand evening of fun and games. It's always a pleasure to entertain our college friends though, and we look forward to their visit next year. Hopefully this time full of Michigan "for the win's."
