Blog world, I have a problem. That problem is an overwhelming need to purchase and consume bulk snacks. Over the last few weeks here in Brooklyn, while on weekly walks to work, I have discovered a secret mecca of deliciousness. Okay, really, it's not so secret, since it seems to be busy all the time, but it certainly was secret to me. Behold, Sahadi's.
Sahadi's is everything I dreamed a small grocery could be. It's exactly what I hoped I would be exposed to living in a big city, and I really couldn't be happier about it. So what makes Sahadi's so awesome? The bulk bins! Lately I've been favoring the fruit and nut options, but there are so many other awesome things like olives by the pound, grains galore, spices and pretty much anything for your baking needs. And the prices! Oh be still my heart. The prices are actually quite low given everything else in this expensive city. Where else do you think I can get an entire
pound of dried bananas for only $1.75?? Other fantastic finds for me have included both dark chocolate covered orange peel (a very personal Parisian favorite) and ginger (good for tummy aches!), dried kiwi, strawberries, peaches, pineapple, and green peas! They're probably not actually peas, more likely dried, roasted and lightly salted chickpeas. All I know is that I am eating them by the bucketful, and I don't feel a single bit bad about it.
The best part about all these bulk snacks, is that they just make me HAPPY. Going to Sahadi's is now something of a weekly ritual, and I look forward to it. The things I buy are mostly good for me (sugared dried pineapple aside, but it's soooooooooo yummy), and I feel lucky to have access to such an overwhelming supply of tasty treats. I hope you're able to find your own little slice of snack happiness in your neck of the woods, and if not, be sure to come visit mine! I'll make sure you get the hook-up.
