Adventures in sewing

It's been a little while since I've taken a class. So recently when Carly asked me if I wanted to join her in a sewing class at Washtenaw Community College, I hmmed and hawed a bit, but finally took the plunge. I already had most of the requirements for the class; a sewing machine, and a basic sewing kit with things like scissors, a seam ripper, pins, tape measure, etc. While I don't have any specific goals for the outcome of the class, like making my own clothes, I thought it would be fun to learn more about my sewing machine (I'm a novice) and learn more sewing lingo in order to work from patterns. Like what the heck does basting mean?? And how in the world do I use bias tape?
I had my first class last night, and of course, once the ball got rolling, now I'm out of control. I've got a project list a million miles long (all simple first projects of course!), NINE different books on sewing being held for me at AADL, and a brain that's geared into overdrive. How can I go wrong? I'll keep you posted on future sewing fun and project outcomes!
